In 2022, inspired by an Elks member and veteran who had seen firsthand the challenges facing veterans returning from active duty, a small group of Elks members launched an annual fundraiser to generate more funds to support veterans and their families. The first Wine and Dine for Warriors event was held in February 2023 and has been held each February since then, netting nearly $100,000 that has supported the following organizations:
- Hero Dogs, Inc., which places assistance dogs with veterans with disabilities.
- Operation Second Chance, providing a variety of services for veterans, including “family healing” and “battle buddies” retreats, visits to hospitalized veterans, etc.
- Platoon 22, which provides mental health treatment, socialization activities, and other suicide prevention services for veterans.
- Wellspring of Life Farm, providing equine and canine therapy for veterans experiencing PTSD, physical and cognitive disabilities.
- Nicholas Ziolkowski Memorial Scholarship for students at Towson University who have served, or will be serving, active duty in any branch of the military.
With the launch of the Wine and Dine for Warriors annual fundraiser in 2023, we have been able to greatly expand our support to veterans and their families, including two new programs started in 2025:
- Army of Hope – provides emergency financial assistance to prevent homelessness and promote housing stability, increase accessibility for veterans with disabilities, increase employability, and promote health and wellness.
- Welcome Home – provides furniture, supplies, and household items for veterans leaving homelessness for permanent housing.
The Charity Fund also provides scholarships for veterans to attend a variety of activities to assist in their adjustment to civilian life after active-duty service. These may include hunting and fishing trips, “battle buddies” retreats for groups of veterans who have served together, “family healing” retreats for hero families, and other activities.
