Ed’s college career was interrupted during World War II, when he enlisted in the Navy on June 27, 1942. He served in Naval Intelligence in Washington, D.C., until August 19, 1945, when he was transferred to Pearl Harbor and served as a communications officer until his discharge on January 17, 1946. Ed’s three brothers also served during World War II, two in the Army and another in the Navy. His younger brother, Joe, was captured during the Battle of the Bulge and was a prisoner of war for nine months.
Upon his discharge, Ed returned to East Stroudsburg State Teachers College to complete his bachelor’s degree in health education.
Following his graduation, Ed moved to Towson, MD from his hometown of Scranton, PA, to take a teaching position. He eventually moved into the field of Vocational Rehabilitation within the Maryland State Department of Education, where he created employment and training opportunities for the deaf and hearing-impaired. Ed earned a master’s degree in education in 1970 and retired in 1988. He passed away in January 2000, at the age of 79.
